Philemon "Phil" R. Mejia Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Philemon “Phil” R. Mejia, 96, of Mason City, IA passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 30, 2022 at MercyOne North Iowa. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2022 from 5-7 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Rosary Service and Vigil Service to follow at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St SE, Mason City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 8, 2022 at Holy Family Catholic Church of Epiphany Parish, 722 N Adams Ave, Mason City. Father Jacob Dunne will be officiating with interment to follow at Elmwood-St Joseph Cemetery in Mason City. A livestream of the service will be available at http://epiphanyparish.org/ Phil was born on November 22, 1925 in Granger, TX to Anastacio and Franscica (Ruiz) Mejia. He was the second youngest of a large family. During his childhood his family moved to Iowa and resided in Manly, IA and Albert Lea, MN area. On November 17, 1956 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Rita and to their union three children were born. Phil worked for Decker’s Meat Packing Plant and at the Brick and Tile Yard in his younger years. He then began working for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 35 years, up until his retirement in 1987. Phil’s hobbies included vegetable gardening, canning, and making the greatest hot sauce. He enjoyed going on road trips and made sure there was a family vacation every year. Phil was very family oriented and took it upon himself to look after his siblings, parents and his wife Rita. He liked playing pool, playing card games, word searches and fishing. Every morning he could be found watching, The Price is Right, and Let’s Make A Deal with his cup of coffee. Phil was known for his love of sweets including cake, candy, doughnuts and cookies. He was a self-taught mechanic and worked on cars or anything that needed fixing for that matter. Above all else, his family was most important to him and he loved spending time with them. Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Frank Mejia of Mason City, Charles (Debbie) Mejia of Mason City and Josie (Andy) De La Cruz Jr. of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren, Jason Mejia, Samantha Mejia, Adriana Perez, Anthony Perez, Matthew Mejia, Andy De La Cruz III and Gabrielle De La Cruz; and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded into death by his wife, Rita Mejia in 2009; parents and 10 siblings.
