Dorothy Pauline Britven

Dorothy Britven, 99, of Mason City, IA died on Thursday, January 8th, 2015 at Good Shepherd Health Center, just short of her 100th birthday, March 9th, 2015. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, January 26, 2015 at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd Street SE, Mason City with visitation to be one hour prior to the service. Pastor Dan Gerrietts from Trinity Lutheran Church will be officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank, Mason City. Dorothy was born on March 9, 1915 in Mason City to William and Fern Cheeseman. She graduated from Mason City High School, where she met her high school sweetheart James Britven. Dorothy and James were united in marriage on April 28, 1933 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. To this union four children were born: William, Marilyn, John, and Linda. Dorothy spent most of her life as a homemaker. She also worked for 20 years in retail at Three Sisters and worked several years for Damon’s. When she wasn’t raising their children and taking care of the home she helped out at her husband’s grocery store, Jim’s Super Market. In her free time she enjoyed volunteering for First Christian Church in Mason City. She was involved in the ladies church circle, the nursery, and pre-school. Dorothy’s hobbies included gardening and needle pointing. She was a great cook and liked to bake. In her younger years she was a wonderful musician and played the saxophone and piano. Later on in life after moving into the nursing home she started playing bingo. Dorothy will be remembered by her family and friends as a very caring and happy person. She was a devoted wife and mother and will be dearly missed. Those left to cherish her memory include her four children, William (Mary Lou) Britven, Marilyn Roth, John (Janice) Britven and Linda Frear; grandchildren, Thomas (Carolyn) Britven, Stephen (Lynn) Britven, Vicki (Eric) Logan, Trena (John) Carpenter and Rachelle (Chris) Horras; great-grandchildren, James, Kristine, Margaret, Joseph and Jonathan Britven; Jonathan, Matthew, David and Thomas Logan; Evan and Grant Carpenter; Harrison and Hannah Horras; sister-in-law, Ann Rezab and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Britven; parents, William and Fern Cheeseman; parents-in-laws, William and Domna Britven; sisters, Evelyn Koch and Arlene Halvorson; sisters-in-laws, Mary Peterson and Kathrynne Williams; brother-in-law, Henry Britven and son-in-law, Richard Roth.
